In the presentation, I will give some personal reflections on how to build a successful research career. Focus will be on the aspects of a research career that goes beyond the obligations and expectations of doing research at a high international level. Some personal opinions on how to build successful research groups that capitalize on the competence of all staff members and how to build well-functioning research teams will also be provided.
